T215A: Communication and information technologies (I)
Spring 2017/2018

Question 1: Global Positioning system (GPS):
This question carries 25 of the marks for this assignment.
During your study of T215A, you have studied the Global Positioning System (GPS) as a ******** system developed by the United States Department of Defense (DOD) for its tremendous application. Over the past years, the GPS has proven to be a useful tool in non-military mapping applications. Using the internet and other resources (e.g. books and AOU e-library), write a short report about GPS that answers the following questions:
• What is GPS and how it works? (4 marks)
• How Accurate is it? What limits its performance and affects its accuracy? (5 marks)
• Mention and briefly explain two different GPS applications. (4 marks)
• Recommend one of these applications that might be used by Arab Open university students and provide strong arguments for your recommendation. (5 marks)

Please adhere to the following guidelines for writing your report:
Your report should be between 700 and 800 words in length. Under-length and over-length summary will be penalized.
Your report should include at least two figures and/or tables. Do not forget to include a caption for each figure/table and to use cross-referencing. (1 mark)
Ensure that your report meets the objectives, has an appropriate structure and style, and that its technical level is appropriate for the audience, purpose and medium. For more details, you can refer to the T215 textbooks (Block 1 – Part 7; Block 2 – Part 7 and Block 3). (1 mark)
In order to be allocated marks for your answer you must demonstrate the quality of your research via the references/citations that you include per question. You must cite all the references (at least five) i.e. any internet web site, book, journal, article, diagram, etc. that you have used as a source of information or inclusion in your report , otherwise you will lose marks (5 marks)

Question 2: Numerical.
This question carries 15 of the marks for this assignment.
Part A: (5 marks)
Assuming that radio waves propagate at a speed of exactly 3×108 meters per second, estimate the propagation time for a path length of 21 km between a mobile and a base station (express your answer in microseconds).
Part B: (10 marks)
A blue ray disk has a writing speed of 400 Mbits/s. How long would it take to store a 8 GB raw video file on this blue ray disk? How small would the 8 GB raw video file become if it is compressed with a compression ratio of 4? Express file size in MB.
