Wendy’s International, Inc.


Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers was considered the third largest fast-food hamburger business in the world, although it reported higher revenues in 2002 than did Burger King. The company as a whole generated $2.73 billion in revenues in 2002, up 14.2 percent from the previous year. With headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, the corporation operated over 9,000 restaurants in 33 countries worldwide.

PART II (10 points)
‘Vertical Integration Strategies extend a firm’s competitive and operating scope within the same basic industry. It involves expanding the firm’s range of activities backward into sources of supply and/or forward towards end users.’ Thompson A.A et al (2005); Crafting and Executing Strategy; p. 150.


Choose an organization and discuss in a well-written essay of around 500 words, how it has used vertical integration strategies, either backward and/or forward, to strengthen its competitive position within its industry.

At least 2 outside resources are to be used. The resources are to be submitted to the tutor. The criteria on pp. 50-53 of B2S2 should be observed while locating source material.

Joint Ventures: A Tool for Growth during an Economic Downturn. IESE Business School. University of Navarra” to answer the following five questions.

Question 1 (20 Marks)


Joint ventures are a type of collaboration permitting to reach out several opportunistic endeavours.
A. Based on B325 material, the study and external references, define what is meant by joint ventures.
B. With reference to the study, critically discuss what the main drivers for joint venture are. Support your answer with examples from the study.




Question 2 (20 Marks)


The focal actor is considered one of the main player allowing collaborations to reach their set objectives.
A. Based on B325 material, define what is meant by focal actor and why collaborative ventures need one.
B. With reference to B325 material (and external reference when needed), identify the main role of focal actor. Critically discuss this role with reference to the study and identify whether the focal actor was able to apply successfully its role in the study of the joint venture in hand. Clearly reflect in your discussion on how problems of communication can lead to failure of joint ventures and the importance of goal compatibility that should be assured by the focal actor to resolve such problem. Support your answer with examples from the study.




Question 3 (20 Marks)


Trust is essential for successful collaboration. However, nowadays it is considered a rare commodity where misuse of power, hostility between members, suspicion and mistrust are more common.
A. Based on B325 material, define what is meant by “trust” and critically discuss how trust can be built over time in collaborative ventures.
B. With reference to the study in hand, identify the role of trust for the joint ventures. Critically discuss the extent to which trust was highlighted in the study and explain the main outcomes of trust/mistrust. Support your answer with examples from the study.




Question 4 (20 Marks)


Leadership activities can be seen from two opposite perspectives: one from the spirit of collaboration and the other towards collaborative thuggery.
A. Based on B325 material, discuss leadership activities from the collaboration perspective.
B. With reference to the study, critically discuss the importance of not only choosing partners but also involving and mobilizing them. Support your answer with examples from the study.




Question 5 (20 Marks)


Based on what you have discussed in the above 4 questions, discuss the notion that joint ventures always offer an opportunity for expansion. Support your answer with examples from the study. Refer to B325 material in your discussion as well as external references when needed.

I. TMA Topic overview: Working Environments




The best companies to work for around the world are places where employees are excited to go to every day. Every year, business magazines like Fortune and Forbes have lists of the best companies to work for. These lists are based on certain criteria related to the working environments of these companies.


II. Discussion Question (for essay paper and PowerPoint presentation)


Select an organization known to be a good place to work for. Discuss the reasons that make this organization such a great place to work. In your discussion, elaborate on the culture, leadership, career development, motivation, engagement and retention strategies followed by this organization.






III. TMA Requirements




This TMA consists of 20% of your total course grade. It is a team project. Each team will consist of 4-5 students. The project is divided into two parts:
1. TMA essay paper (50 marks out of 100)
2. PowerPoint presentation (50 marks out of 100)


• Teams of the same session should select different organization to discuss for this project. Students should arrange with their tutors in order to verify that no other team had selected the same organization for the project.


1. TMA Essay Paper (50 marks out of 100) (1500 words)


• The cut-off date to upload the essay paper to the LMS is December 15, 2015.
• Each team will work on the TMA paper as they would normally do with other courses, but this time in group. This is a good opportunity for students to learn a set of skills that are very important in the professional business world, such as time management, planning, communicating with others, etc..
• Each team is required to select a team leader. The TMA paper should be uploaded to the LMS by the team leader only. This is a very important requirement in order to avoid Turnitin similarities.
• The names of all the team members should be written on the pt3 form, including the name of the team leader. All team members will receive the same mark on the TMA essay paper. Students are required to use the pt3 form provided on the LMS for this specific TMA.




2. PowerPoint Presentation (50 marks out of 100)


• Each team will prepare a PowerPoint presentation that reflects on the most important points discussed in the paper.
• Each team will be allowed a total of 20 minutes. 12-15 minutes for the presentation plus 5 minutes for Q&A and discussion.
• All team members should contribute equally. Each member should speak for approximately 3 minutes. The last team member to speak should lead a class discussion.
• Team members will be marked based on the “Team presentation evaluation form”. Team members are advised to use this form as a baseline for preparing the presentation.
• Team members will receive the same mark on the PowerPoint presentation, given they have shown up and participated in the presentation. Team members who don’t show up or participate in the presentation will receive a zero on the presentation part.
• Balanced participation in the presentation is one of the requirements mentioned in the presentation marking rubric.

The student’s work should be presented in an ESSAY of around 1200 words.
Referencing:
The essay should include a list of references (print and electronic) at the end in addition to in-text referencing as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing System. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.
Writing and Discussion Topic:
Famous artists (painters, musicians, etc.) have established reputations. These reputations are far from being uniform, with each of these figures having more than one “reputation”. Moreover, the process of reputation construction/formation is far from being a simple and straightforward process as very little is involved in investigating the sources and accuracy of reputations. History is full of artists whose reputations in their days and in later days are much contested. Choose one such artist and provide a study of his/her reputation and the issues involved in its making. Note that the artist should not be among those covered in Book 1. First, you should read to build your understanding of the complex theme of reputation before focusing your attention on material that would help you address the subthemes numbered 1-5 below, as they apply to your artist of choice:
1) Highlight the issues involved in setting the chosen artist in his/her historical context.

In answering this question:
Discuss briefly the concept of authority in literature and discuss how works of different authors become authoritative with clear illustration/ examples. (6 points)
Read closely chapter 3 of Book 1 ‘Homer’s Iliad: Book 22 lines 166 to 265, and reflect upon the various devices used by Homer that give this master piece "authority". (6 points)
Spend enough time to read poetry by different authors, and choose the poet who impressed you with the use of different devices. Introduce and explain the poem briefly, quote the stanza which must not be less than eight lines and analyze/explain how various devices have been used by the poet in the lines of your choice. (6 points)
Conclude the essay on why and how poetry is an important tool of expression. (2 points)

GlaxoSmithKline: Successful Internal Innovation
A firm may pursue new technology in two principal ways: internally, through research and development, or externally, by purchasing the technology. Each activity has benefits and drawbacks, and each takes different skills. Therefore, a firm like Cisco or GlaxoSmithKline may have both internal and external development efforts; the firm typically will develop greater skill in one area than the other. For example, Cisco’s competitive advantage has come from obtaining technology from external activities, in particular, through a large number of acquisitions each year.

You have seen in T325 - Block 1 that “The optical components of a digital camera are similar to those of a traditional film camera. The difference is that, instead of projecting an image onto a film, the image is formed on a microelectronic sensor. Most cameras use a sensor of one of two types: CCD (charge coupled device) and CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor)” [1]
Using the AOU e-library and/or any internet reliable resource (you are encouraged to use Google Scholar for scientific research), select a scientific publication1 that provides a comparison of the two sensor types. After reading the paper2, you are asked to answer the following questions.

This question carries 70% of the marks for this assignment

The overall learning objective of this practical question is to get familiar with the concepts of symmetric key encryption and hashing. This will be your first-hand experience with using the OpenSSL command- line tool to encrypt/decrypt messages/files under different encryption modes, and to construct message digests with hash functions.


OpenSSL is an open source cryptographic library, providing cryptographic APIs at different layers. It is open source with GPL license. All the necessary information about OpenSSL can be found at [1].We will be using the OpenSSL command line tool. This tool comes built-in in most Linux distributions. If you are an MS Windows user, you can download the command line tool from [2] or [4]. A good tutorial for using the basic OpenSSL command lines can be found in [3]


Openssl provides a command mode where you can interact with the API; this mode can be used (after installing openssl) by simply typing openssl at the command line. In order to check how to use the various commands, simply type openssl <command_name> -help on the command line (or simply type
<command_name> -help if you have accessed the OpenSSL command prompt (openssl>)). Unix/Linux users can also get further information by using the man command (e.g. man enc). The OpenSSL [1] website is also very helpful to get additional information about the different available commands.


Part 1: Symmetric encryption


1. The command that allows you to use symmetric encryption is enc command (by typing enc -help, you get all the associated options). In this part, you will play with various encryption algorithms and modes. You will proceed as follows:
A. Create a file named file_<student_name>_<student_id> where <student_name> should be replaced by your name and <student_id> with your student ID. Fill this file with your name, your student ID and any additional information of your choice (1 mark)
B. Encrypt the file using the enc command line tool; you can select the algorithm of your choice.
You will be prompted to enter the password (and confirm it). Explain the different steps (3 marks)
2. Decrypt the ciphertext produced in question 1(using the same password of course). (3 marks)
3. Decrypt a ciphertext using a wrong password. What do you observe? Explain it (you can refer to internet resources to explain the output you had) (4 marks)


Part 2: Hash functions
1. Create a text message like “Hi, this is <student_name>. My ID is <student_id>. This is a trial message to test digest functions!”, save it in a file named msg_<student_name>_<student_id>, and calculate its digest using the following hash algorithms: MD5, SHA1, SHA-256. Choose the output in binary format. (4 marks)


2. Now try to modify the message (e.g. delete the “!” at the end of the message) and recalculate the digest. (3 marks) What do you note when you compare the (above) two digests for a given hash function (you can use any hexadecimal editor for this purpose)? Explain it. (2 marks)


3. If you apply the hash function a second time to the result (digest), what is the size of the second result? Explain it. (4 marks)

4. If you give MD5 input a file/text with a size of 14 bytes (you can use Openssl rand command to create a random file of given size or any other file editor), what is the result obtained after hashing this file? (4 marks)
